My Coop
Hi Everyone,

My wife and I live ~2 miles from the Atlanta capitol. We moved into our neighborhood earlier this year. A couple friend of ours purchased a home in the same neighborhood, and their house came with a chicken coop. The currently have 4 hens, about 7 months old.

Our first thoughts were like "chickens! are you serious?!"

We visited with their chickens, and we were immediately hooked!

My wife and I decided to build our own coop. We are almost done, just need to build and put the doors on the coop and add another layer of paint in the coop. I plan I posting the building process on the coop page (having a hard time navigating to the right page).

run foot print: 60 sqft
run heigh: 7 ft front, 6 ft back
coop area: 24 sqft
coop height: 4 ft

Currently, we are asking around for chickens. It seems during the fall it's a bit harder to find chickens people are willing to sell. We'd like to have 4 pastured chickens, various breeds.

Love this website and look forward to interacting in the forums!

Greetings from Kansas, AW, and :welcome. Great to have you here! Lots of folks start out like you - never would have considered chickens and then, BOOM - they're hooked. Looks like you have a great start with that coop. You are correct...chickens to buy this time of year are scarcer than in the warmer months. Are you looking for chicks are started pullets? Advantages and disadvantages to both. I'm biased...I love baby chicks. Here are some links that might help you along:
The Learning Center is your A to Z guide for all thing chickens and is just great informative reading

In the following link you can scroll down and find the GA thread if you want to chat with fellow Georgia chicken keepers https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you
Here is a link to hatcheries and breeders https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/16/chicken-breeders-hatcheries As I said, a lot of the hatcheries are close to shutting down for the season but some still ship up to November (Murrary McMurray comes to mind) and some allow small orders (MyPetChicken).
I wish you well in your research and acquisition of chickens. Ask any questions you have along the way. BYC is a friendly place to be! Good luck! :)

Glad you joined the flock! Nice coop! Yes, we visited some friends who had chickens a few years ago and we were hooked! Now we have 28 lovely chickens (various breeds.)
Yes, you are correct. Its a little bit hard to find people who are willing to sell in the fall/winter. I agree with @QueenMisha , you have been given some great links!
Hope you enjoy your time on here!
