Hello - we have a mature flock of mixed breeds - Americaunas, Marans, Orps and Rocks - we love fresh eggs and will be adding blue and olive egg layers in a few weeks.

We have a cam on our hens (HenCam I) due to a suspected egg breaker.

We are thinking about expanding to moderate production of eggs and meat birds due to the demand for local food in our area. Anyone here with pasture-raised birds experience?

Thanks!

Glad you joined us! I used to raise layers on pasture, but not meat birds. It's a great way to raise and keep a flock, but you'll have to be diligent about predators. Here are some threads and an article on the topic:

Welcome to BYC! That's a nice, mixed flock you have. I like the Buff Orpingtons because of their beautiful feathers and calm, gentle temperament and keep a few of them in my flock for just those reasons. I also keep a few Americaunas (they're actually Easter Eggers, and not true Ameraucanas) in my flock because my granddaughter likes the colored eggs. Good luck with your flock.
