Spent about a year getting ready for my birds. Bought an English Shepherd (Sam) to help with the vermin. First time chicken owner, bought 4 each dominique, Rhode Island Red, austrolorp, red lace wyndotte, & Orpington. Placed hardware cloth at the base of the yard with chain link for the yard. Then wrapped chain link with chicken wire, including creating a chicken wire cap. Yard is 20'x30'. Thought I had prepared for the worst BUT lost 3 orpingtons in a week while I was at work. Discovered a gap between coop & lean-to. Filled the gap. Discovered digging near the gate...poured a foot of concrete around base of the yard & hung electric fence. Folks laugh at me building Ft. Knox. Haven't lost anymore birds so far. (Fingers crossed). My plan is to sell fresh eggs & so far I have more orders than eggs. Love watching the chickens waddle across the yard when they are allowed to free range. Made the mistake of naming a few...Dot, a Dominique first to show curiosity; Gladys, australorp; Big Red, RIR rooster; & Curly Tail, who turned out to be a beautiful red laced wyndotte rooster. Requested pulled sexing but realize can be 100%.

Sam has done great with the chickens. Only had one attack but I was close enough to intervene. He hasn't given me any problems since. I leave him out with them while they free range.

Gladys has learned if I find a bug or work & she is nearby, I'll give it to her so she is under foot all the tiime.

I have more stories & lots of questions but this is my intro. Love my birds. Hope to hear from you soon.

I love your assortment of chickens, by the way. Your chicken stories will be very much appreciated here, since we all are huge poultry fans!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm glad your dog is doing so well with your chickens, especially since dogs and chickens don't usually mix well. Dogs typically view chickens either as prey, or else as chew toys. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in protecting your flock from predators.)
