New to BYC, Great Information

Retired to our farm after 40 years in Law Enforcement, been raising chickens for the last 16 years for fun. Grand daughter picks out chicks every Easter so we usually don't know what we have until they get older. This year we have barred rocks, rhode island reds, some black ones, yellow, and tan. Friend gave me four guineas but coons got three, so we're down to Henny Guinea and 23 chickens. Luckily only one rooster (Barred Rock) who's still friendly.

Chickens have free run of everything, thanks to the automatic chicken door on the chicken house (best $300 I ever spent). I train my chickens with roasted peanuts to come when called and follow me around. They also follow the dogs around the yard. Raccoons are the biggest problem but we also have coyotes, bobcats, owls, possums, Eagles, hawks, and last year a neighbor's dog that have killed them. Invested in a professional trapper's heavy-duy live trap ($50) which is another good investment after trying the flimsy "Havaheart" ones. We're in northeast Missouri near Hannibal.

Welcome to BackYardChickens! So glad to have you here in our wonderful community of friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people! Thank you for your past years of law-enforcement service. A dear friend of ours who was a police officer was killed in the line of duty many years ago. We feel very sad about what's happening right now. Chickens help you feel better though!
