Hello all, I am new to BYC and posting here for my first time. I am a lifelong bird owner having been born into a family in the late '60's with a modest organic farm that had a humongous multi-species run and coop in the Malibu foothills of CA. We moved to the 'burbs when I was 10, and went without feathered friends until I was 20. Resumed the bird obsession with little parrots, working my way up slowly in size and temperament and have found myself full circle back here with chickens. I blame the organic garden in my new backyard for these latest acquisitions.
The other week I adopted two beautiful 6-week Buff Orpington pullets and an adorable 3 week Americauna named Esmeralda who is *supposed* to be a pullet but is defiantly doing disturbing cockerel behavior. I am hoping she is merely gender-confused and not doing what I think she/he is doing. I am having my mom (from the organic farm in the last paragraph) over to show me how to sex them tonight - A chance to show off my garden!! Hoping little Essie doesn’t start to crow, but am prepared with a back-up plan if she/he does.
I used to be involved very heavily in Living History and have recently recovered from cancer. I am a long standing citizen of the interwebz (look me up: 'icbleu' since 1994) and am getting married in two short weeks to my best friend. We are learning to dance the tango and I am slowly converting him to the better things in life - like cooking from scratch, organic gardening and social justice projects. I learned about BYC from the 'net on some of my many late night searches for more information about chickens. I even saw your sticker at Concord Feed and Pet Supply!
Looking at coops this month as the babies won’t be little forever. I know what I want, but am having a hard time finding many suppliers - DYI is not an option for me at this time. I discovered the Laughing Chickens coops two weeks ago and looked at the Backyard Unlimited stuff this morning. They look promising, but I am stingy even though I want something that lasts forever - I am a hard customer to please sometimes.
Glad to be here and hope to learn about what resources are available in my area, make new friends, learn about chickens and share what I know.
