Hi all! I'm Grem, and I'm excited to finally take part in this community after lurking for so long!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I was raised around chickens since I was about six! I'm finally getting started on keeping my own flock, which I got back in February and March!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Right now I have 18 chickens!
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have 14 black jersey giant hens and 4 barred rock hens. Things got a little crazy when trying to order my first flock so I don't have a rooster right now, but I'm planning on getting a rooster soon! Hopefully another jersey giant
I'm also eyeballing some easter eggers, cream legbars, welsummers, salmon faverolles, and zombie chickens haha.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Where to start? There's the obvious of knowing that I've got a steady food supply... and the eggs taste so much better than store bought! When I was little I refused to eat store bought eggs, haha. One of the main motivating factors of getting chickens for me was bug control! I'm terrified of ticks... and where I live has PLENTY!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love to draw! I mainly do digital art and I dabble in animation once in a blue moon.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a pet iguana who hangs out in my room! His name is Baby and he's super chill... for an iguana lol. My family also has 4 cats and two goats!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC while looking up information about Jersey Giants! I've known about BYC since December of 2023, and I figured I'd go ahead and join since I found myself lurking in the forums so much!
