Hi, I'm Julie and I'm new here at BYC. I am enjoying all the trustworthy knowledge I am finding here on the site, so thank you for that! I have five chickens that I began raising this past spring. Two ISA Reds, and one each of a Rhode Island Red, Wyandotte, and Aracauna. All are hens, and they get along famously. I will be looking for more advice as the weather gets cooler here along the shores of Lake Michigan. I am in western Michigan, north of Muskegon. Winters here can be pretty wet and cold, with normal temps in the 20-30F range, and include what we love to call "Lake effect snow," which means we get more than anywhere else in the state due to the moisture the big lake puts into our weather systems. My hens are well protected in a covered coop and have the option of either an open run, or a covered one for winter browsing. I will be looking for info on the deep litter method, using straw as a way to keep the girls' feet warm, as well as how to best shield my coop from wind and ice in the coming months.
My husband and I are empty nesters ourselves, and both enjoy our chickens as an inexpensive and fruitful hobby. We have three grown children and one grandchild, a two year old who enjoys learning about the chickens, and loves to help in the coop. Thanks for the add here!

G’Day from down under Julie :frow Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
