Hello all,

My husband and I are redesigning part of the back yard and are considering adding chickens. We have never had chickens before (just house birds), so I am trying to learn all I can before jumping in with both feet. I am trying to understand our city code (CA zip 94518), and it says coop must be 25' from property line. I do not have a spot in the yard that is 25 feet away from all property lines. Am I not understanding this correctly? Any advice or clarity would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks :)

Good for you for considering getting chickens. They are so much fun!

Is there a minimum acreage or lot size required for chickens? Make sure you are looking at the correct ordinances for your zoning. Your city government should have a land use planning department who can help you out. Of course, once you bring a question to them, you open the door to scrutiny. If your lot is odd or perhaps grandfathered into the zoning, you may be able to get a variance. Good luck.
