Hello,
New here, thanks for having me - wanted to introduce myself. I am a new chicken mom. We got chickens primarily for bug control and to entertain our 2 young (human) children who are almost-5 and almost-3. I think my husband and I have had more fun having the chicks than our kids though, and I never thought of myself as a chicken/bird lady AT ALL. Anyways - let's cut to the chase!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We are brand new to chickens - got 8 little chicks at the beginning of May.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We lost 1 chick the first week (RIP Daisy) - she had pasty butt and even after cleaning her off well, just was always smaller and weaker than the others. We have 7 chicks now that will be 5 weeks old on June 5th.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We have 1 buff orpington (definitely the sweetest), 3 araucanas, and 3 silver laced wynadottes. Highly suspect that one of the SLWs is actually a rooster, despite ordering pullets.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Obviously the fresh eggs and bug control are a big plus but I was not expecting how "pet-like" having chickens would be. We are still only a few weeks in, but our kids have really enjoyed raising the chicks, helping feed them, working on getting the outdoor pen ready, etc.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We also raise 2 young kidsWatching tv/movies, video games, weight lifting, playing down at the lake, skiing, visiting the county fairs in the fall.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have 2 young boys - 5 years old in August and 3 years old in September. The older one is autistic (though highly functioning) and has always shown an interest in animals. We have considered getting a dog at some point, but opted to start with chickens for now.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I believe I came across BYC site doing google searches trying to get prepared for our chicks. Finally joined so that I can ask questions and interact more with other members/get advice, etc.
