I free-range my Barr rock chickens, they took to it great. However most birds will, they naturally want to hunt and peck for food, so it is easy to entice them out. if you live in town, you may want to check up on your local ordinances, however I find a rooster to be invaluable for freeranging hens. He protects them and keeps them togeather. But if a rooster is not allowed, an enclosed yard should be enough.
