New to BYC with a small old mixed flock

You packed a lot of information into that intro; it was like a roller coaster ride with ups and downs. Congrats on the inherited birds -- including the highly prolific one and their ability to live long lives -- sorry for your losses, curses on your evil neighbors who let the dog in to kill roosters and, honestly, your self-described stupidest drake sounds like a critter I would adore.

I've been a long time lurker since before we 'inherited' a group of hens that were abandoned one late summer years ago.

That group was two white leghorns, a Rhode island red, a gold-laced wyandotte, and a brown Orpington, or near enough to be identified by appearance, eggs, and behavior as such. The Wyandotte and one of the Leghorns yet hold on in their dotage and the Leghorn remained a prolific nearly 300 egg a year layer for a solid 5 years and sparsely (for her, being ~100 eggs) last year. She's now into our seventh year with her, we estimate she was about 20 weeks old when we rescued her. The Wyandotte has laid less than 100 eggs her whole time with us, but she is just the most gorgeous bird to this day.

We have dealt with fly strike on the deceased Leghorn and Orpington very quickly one summer, the Red passed at two suddenly without any evidence of illness, right off the roost.

We have since adopted a Buff Orpington who was sadly attacked when the neighbor's dog chewed through the fence, another Rhode Island Red who is a terrible layer, and a lot of 6 roosters and 1 hen of some Red hybrid. We still have the hen, the roosters were all ready for slaughter at a family property and someone pulled back a gate to let their dogs in to kill them. They weren't yet crowing either.

We also have two Muscovy hens and a standard duck Drake who is just the dumbest creature on the planet and kept solely for the entertainment value. Goodness knows he eats like the four surviving chicken hens combined and lays no kind of eggs we would ever eat.

Well, that's that for now. We particularly love the Muscovies who are prolific layers, quiet, and really know how to take care of trouble.

I'm never wanting to live wherever you are! Sounds like a herd of cruel folks running around killing chickens!

This BYC is a much nicer place than that area, i promise!
I've a small mixed flock myself and fairly new.
So welcome aboard!
I think feathered friends are the bomb!
I'm older, so have been thru the usual gamut of kids, dogs, ferrets, cats and other pets.
Chickens are the best. By far.
Don't tell my kids!

I just am finishing up brooding the last 8. One of which I'm worried has Marek's.
I added 25 to my existing 17 flock this spring.
