Hi, I am fairly new to raising chickens. I've had my flock for almost 4 months now. One of my leghorns laid her first egg last week, it was very small, and she hasn't laid another since. She's only 16-17 weeks old. Is this normal? She's acting fine, squatting, singing her egg song, but no egg.

Welcome to BYC! So glad you could join us!

Yeah, when they are getting in the groove of laying they may lay two eggs in one day or no eggs for a few days. Make sure she is getting plenty of protein and vitamins, and check that she isn't hiding them somewhere.

Best of luck with your birds!

Egg laying is an inexact art for new layers as GitaBrooks has said. Keep an eye on them. You will be getting regular presents before you know it. Until then you can get some odd surprises, such as eggs so large you may feel a little pang of sympathy for the girl who popped it out. Its a lot like a humans menses, it is intermittent in the beginning and then for most it gets a regular pattern. For some they will tend to be sporadic layers for the duration of their egg laying. You can control shell thickness (if its getting a little thin) by giving crushed oyster shell to your girls. Just a bit scattered on the ground and mine tend to find it when they need it.
Congrats on the start of (what I believe to be) the best part of keeping chickens.

layer feed should meet their needs, but, always good to put out a container of crushed oyster shell - it the girls think they need more calcium they will take it.
