Hi, I am from Fresno, California. I have had chickens for 3-4 years. I currently have 2 Americaunas and an Australorp. I have had Wyandottes and a Buff Orpington. I have chickens as pets and for eggs. I have put them to work making compost for my garden.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Australorps are my favorite standard breed. I raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and excellent layers of large, brown eggs. If you haven't done so already, definitely our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Our flock is currently cleaning up the old bits of our garden and doing a fine job weeding and cultivating (not to mention, fertilizing). They make good little gardeners! Have fun with your flock.

Thanks for joining us!

Welcome to BYC,,,

As Drumstick Diva says chickens have many other duties, besides just making compost or bug control.

I have mine trained to pick weeds in the garden, and to aerate the soil. I also have a few that have guard duty and provide 24 hour security for my family.

I have three I have trained to drive the pickup truck, I am trying to get one to drive the van but he is having trouble learning.

I also have little bags I hang over there necks and have a ring holding it open so they can plant seeds in the fields and garden. They are not real good at keeping the rows straight though. So do not let some know it all tell you a chicken can do everything and anything. I find turkeys are much better at that.

And finally beware of chickadees! They are evil...

And enjoy your time here at BYC. just do not listen to some of the know it alls, check with me if you need a fact verified.. Welcome!!

Hi I am from Effingham, Il ... My family and I just got some chickens! So this is all new for us!! We got 5 tiny baby chickens and one seems very sick... During the day you would be fine, depends on night time temp and how old the chicks are..

And welcome to BYC. I am willing to bet there is a IL. thread this is a question for people in your local area answer. I use our Minnesota thread all the time, people in your area know best about what you need in your area.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Congrats on getting chicks, but sorry to hear one isn't doing well. I'd pull that sick one away from the other 4, put her in a place by herself. She might get lonesome so put something like a soft stuffed toy in with her. I'd set her up with a heat lamp in one corner so she can warm up or cool off as she needs. Is she eating and drinking ok?
