New to BYC

Hi..I am a new member and a pea fowl enthusiast looking to raise a discrete set in my back yard here in Elgin Texas as a pesticide free and pretty way of dealing with insects and vermin. I have noticed that all of my favorite zoos have free roaming pea fowl for this purpose and am interested in purchasing unrelated sexed male and female chicks to be raised as free range back yard pets.I know as adults they will need an enclosed space to escape weather and roost but will I need to have their wings pinioned in order to prevent escape from 6 foot fencing? The yard is approximately .4 acres

The peafowl forum is the perfect place to ask questions about them.

But I can tell you that a 6' fence will not keep one inside their area. I used to have a neighbor with a peacock that would routinely fly up into our Live Oak trees, he would perch about 15'-20' off the ground. He also liked to sit on top of the neighbor's house and screech.

Our zoo always has free ranging peafowl and guineas galore. I would think you need a very large fenced enclosure with top. Peacocks especially seem to love exploring and some end up on another person's farm.

The folks on the peafowl thread are very generous with their time and advice - really good people.
