Hello
I'm Richard, love this site, find very useful information about my girls. I have 6 heritage mix hens that are 6 months old. They started laying May 09, 2020. We live in the Cariboo in British Columbia, winters are sort of long and can get -40 for short periods. I built a coop that's 4x4x8 with a run that's 16x8 with 2 nest boxes accessible from the outside. They have 2 roosts but decided they prefer the rafters for sleep time. I'm going to put power in the coop for a light and a heat source for the winter to keep them warm and try to keep them laying over the winter, should they cooperate. They have access to our yard (1/2 acre) which they love roaming around in. They get a little demanding when we keep them in the run and pace around wanting out and squawking loudly, so we just let them decide by leaving the door open to yard, at night they get locked in the coop to keep them safe. They all have names and follow us around the yard expecting treats, that's my wife's fault lol. Love sitting on the deck watching them roam around, when one finds a worm or juicy morsel they others chase each other around is hilarious.
