Hi,
I am new to BYC! I heard about BYC from some books on chickens that I had checked out from the library and a friend who raises chickens. I am very excited to have this resource. We are just getting started on raising chickens... in fact we are in the process of getting the backyard ready, building our coop and run area and will be purchasing chicks this spring. So at the VERY beginning. We are looking at getting 4-6 chickens. I have been researching best breeds for egg laying and disposition. We live in coastal north San Diego County, so it doesn't get very cold here nor very hot. We have lots of raccoons, possums and coyotes that live in nearby canyons and we have rats occasionally (like everyone else). Also hawks around during the day. The coop will be raised off of the ground - so looking at best bedding. Also looking to construct an additional portable run that can be moved around the yard during the daytime hours. Prefer feed that is organic - no soy. Any recommendations or tips or considerations are welcomed!
