New to BYC

Hey everyone! First time chicken owner (2 California greys, 3 dark brahmas, and 3 cream legbars) and have had a lot of fun with them so far. They’re only 3 weeks old but my husband and I are more hands on and built our own coop to match our home. I joined BYC so I could learn more about raising chickens. My daughter (2) loves her baby chicks and always snuggled with them. I’m super excited to see them grow. But to all of you seasoned chicken owners, how do you tell them apart as they age? When they were baby chicks they had distinct face markings but now that their feathers are growing in I’m having a harder time telling who is who!

Hi, thanks for joining us! The more time you spend with them, the more subtle differences you'll see, especially as they age. Sometimes it's the difference in personalities, or differences in things like combs, etc.

Welcome to BYC!
Try puttimg a tiny bit of food coloring on the tail feathers. This always helps me until I find other traits to tell them apart. (Don't use red coloring, as they will peck at it. )
