In the Brooder
Good morning everyone!
Figured I'd at least say hello, I've been creeping on this site for about a year now. You all have been such an amazing resource for me since I've started with my all my birds.
Currently, I've got seven pullets. All Easter Eggers and almost a year old, brought them home May 8th 2021 so that's their unofficial birthday! We'll be picking up more chicks to add to our layer flock, 2 Olive Egger and 2 Salmon Favorelles on May 7th, and 3 Black Copper Marans on May 21st. We've also got a Pekin duck that we received in ill health, he was being picked on and missing all his chest feathers, weak and couldn't walk. He had a severe case of bumblefoot (diagnosed via BYC!) that I treated and was able to remove, but he's likely to be permanently limping as that hasn't gone away. But he's improved significantly and I'm wanting to get him some fellow ducks this spring as he's been alone for almost a year now which is too long.
We just received our order of 75 (+7 extra) butcher chickens in the mail on the 20th. (Haven't lost any yet, but we'll see.) We're raising them for a few families as we have the space and means to do so. I'm not sure I'm ready for the processing of chickens, think I might leave that for the hubby to do.
BUT! We had discussed potentially keeping one or two of the roosters to add in with our flock, and I've already got my eye on one of these boys. He was a mistake as we had ordered White Plymouth Rock, but Fabio is pure yellow with feathered legs. The others are all clean-legged and mottled gray and yellow. I think he may be a White Brahma, but we'll have to wait and see. Do you guys think he'll end up being too big for the girls? By my understanding, he'd likely end up being twice (maybe even three times) the size of our girls.
Either way, it'll be great to finally be able to have the ability to reach out for questions and advice as I (inevitably continue) to grow my flock. Chicken math right?
