Hello everyone! I’m new to BYC but not new to chickens. This is our second flock, and first in Virginia. The last was in Orlando, Fl before having chickens in the city was legal.

This small flock of 4 (was five, RIP Ruby) is all RIR, with a Red Ranger Rooster. Our coop is so far away from the house that there’s no power out there. We worry a little bit about the cold, but so far so good.

We free range when the weather is fine, but since Ruby got picked off by a fox when the weather turned cold, and there’s been a young bear hanging around, we’ve been keeping them in the run.

I’m a firm believer in reclaiming wood and other items to make chicken raising cheaper. So we built 90% from pallets and blocks. I think we maybe spent $250-300 on a 4x7 coop and a 16x20 run. Most of that was for fencing. My only regret is that we didn’t raise the coop itself higher off the ground to stash feed buckets and water underneath. And of course make it easier on my back when cleaning.

Love your little community here. It’s the first place I turn when I need a solid answer from ppl who actually own chickens! So thanks and happy to be here. 🤗

It's nice to have you here! Yeah, I am thankful we have one coop that's elevated where I just pull a wagon up to and scoop it out. Cleaning it is easy breezy. (Our other one is elevated, too, but I need a shorter shovel because some of the support posts are too close together to make scooping it out "a breeze," lol.)

It sounds like you're doing a good job with your chickens! It's nice you have the skills to build out of reclaimed materials.

Thanks for joining and welcome to BackYard Chickens!
