Hi I have had chickens for about 6 years, I am desperate need of some advice. My beloved Queenie girl passed on Sunday and I have one 5 1/2 yr old barred rock I call big mama. She have never been the friendly chicken she won’t let you touch her or hold her she will eat out of your hand. I loved all my chickens but I just can’t get anymore it is heart breaking when they die. I would like to keep big mama and give her a good life for the remainder of her time here, i have read people have kept single chickens and I know they are flock animals and belong with other chickens. I have asked a few people but because of her age and she doesn’t lay they say no, closest sanctuary is 5 hours away. I do have a dog she hangs with and I’m out there with her only time she is alone in at night, and then with winter I’m to sure the extent of time I will be able to do if the weather is bad. Please give me advise, I want to do what’s best for her.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. This is a great place to explore and hang out. They are not solitary creatures, are you able to keep at least one other?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Sorry about your solo girl.

could you find at least one or two more to be with her? she may become depressed if her friend died and now she's alone.:(
