Thanks everyone I feel very welcome. So my first question is what is the best chickens to get for laying eggs and how long do they lay?

It's best to post questions in the other sections, but I'll answer this one as best I can:
Barred Rocks are good brown-egg layers.
Rhode Island Reds are also brown-egg layers and fairly good.
Ameracaunas and Easter Eggers lay blue and green eggs (which can be popular). My six-year-old Easter Egger hen stopped laying regularly at about age 3, but has started up again now.
As far as I know, Leghorns and other such birds can be good as well.
Here's a link that might be able to help: http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/which-breed-is-right-for-me.aspx

from Florida. There's lots and lots of different areas to this forum. You'll find a wealth of beginner information and grow with the rest of us who became "newbies" earlier this year. Have fun!
