New to BYC!

Hi there,
Just joined BYC and looking forward to all the information and community. I had chickens years ago but am just starting back up with a few hens. I haven't received my chicks yet but getting ready to build my portable coop. I want the chickens to be able to free range but with the predators around need to offer them some protection. Any help would be appreciated since the chickens I had before were in a large stationary coop.

! Great to have you here! Yes, free ranging vs. contained is a big change. Personally, I allow my birds to do a lot of free ranging. I am prepared to lose the occasional bird but try to balance the risk with the benefit. I think free ranging produces better eggs and tastier meat - not to mention happier birds. I just try to be vigilant - letting my dogs patrol the area to help keep chicken thieves away, walking around outside when the birds are out, etc. It just comes down to a matter of your comfort level.
