I think that someone earlier in the thread noted that bears were typically more interested in chicken food than chickens? And also that it was pretty hard to keep a bear out of someplace that it wants to get into? Oh yeah, that was me.
Well, apparently my post went out on the bear network! Because last night we had the first bear/poultry interaction that we've had for several years. Fortunately my opinion held up - this time.
We had seen bear signs for the last couple of days, and last evening we saw what appeared to be a yearling bear (~200#) that was not at all afraid of humans (which is not a good sign for bear/human coexistence!).
And overnight this bear dug into a well-secured roosting house (see below) and destroyed the feeder and lots of food. But none of the chickens were harmed!
