This is my first time with BYC and I came here needing some questions answered about broody hens. I have had chickens for about 4 years, starting out with just a handful of laying hens. My husband wasn't sure we needed even that many. Now I have 45 chickens. The more the better, I say. I am kind of addicted to their quirky ways. They are a ton of entertainment and joy. I have Ameraucanas (which are my favorites), Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Wyandottes, Australorpes, Leghorns, and Anconas. I like a variety and that's what I've got. Am hoping to get a few more.
I live on an 80 acre Kansas micro-farm with wheat, cattle and horses. The horses are my main love, in that I love to trail ride as often as I can. However, it is the chickens who keep me grounded. I can spend hours with them. They are such a social group and a group who doesn't seem to care what you have to say, they're always friendly in whatever they have to say.
I hope to learn more about chickens thru BYC and my first question has to do with a broody hen. We don't have a rooster, so I got some fertile eggs from my friend. I just put the eggs under "Pheasant" today. I know it will take around 21 days to hatch, but my question is will the hen go back to laying again once she has finished raising the chicks?
Thanks,

Welcome to BYC. Once she gets the chicks to the teen aged stage, she will go back to laying. Actual time of returning to laying varies from breed to breed and from individual to individual within the breed. Make sure she is set up on her nest so that other hens can not interfere with her brooding. Good luck for a successful hatch.

Welcome to BYC!

Sourland X2 She will get back to laying when her hormones tell her so. Each hen is different. But eventually she will get back to business after she finishes with her brood.

Welcome to our flock and enjoy yours!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like you have a really varied flock, lots of nice breeds. X3 your girl will get back to laying sometime after she has finished raising the chicks, usually a month or two.

Sending good hatching vibes your way

- she will raise them as her own chicks. Broodies make the best incubators. What breed of eggs did you put under her?

Thanks to everyone out there for the great information. The broody is an Ameraucana, which I really didn't think would become broody. The eggs I put under her are all Ameraucana eggs. There are 6 eggs. We'll see how she does with this project.
