Started with chickens about a year ago and purchased 10 'hens' from my neighbor that were a couple of months old. 2 Dominique's and 8 reds. Soon after two of the hens started crowing! About two months ago the raccoon's discovered my coop and over two days I lost both roosters and three hens. I set some traps and in 4 days caught 3 raccoon's and two possums!

Wanting to grow my flock again I tried ordering some eggs and had a co-workers daughter incubate them for me. From a dozen Blue Americana eggs I got one chick, and from a dozen orpington eggs got one black, and 4 buffs 9 i was wanting blues!). I also just picked up 4 jubilee orpington chicks but have already lost one.

I have already used the BYC website several times for information and glad to be part of the community.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

So sorry for your losses. You might want to stop by our Predators section if you need any help with deterring these determined critters...

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Drumstick diva has given you a good suggestion regarding purchasing older birds. The other option is to buy chicks from a reputable hatchery where you can order the specific breed you want, and order pullets as opposed to straight run. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

I've had losses too. It happens but check out the sites they suggested it will help and prevent any further losses. I get new chicks from a hatchery via my local feed store to make sure the chance of too many roos hopefully does'nt happen.
