In our mixed flock we have some Rhode Island Reds and some Barred Rocks...all good layers and personable birds. Maybe you can find a place where you can get 1 of each breed you are interested in. It's nice to have a mix.

Well....I got my little chickies over the weekend! 2 barred rocks and, I think, a Buff Orpington, and a white leghorn. I'm still trying to find the right plan for the coop. Probably a 3 sided coop since I live in the desert to probably a removable 4th side. Anyway, I've arrived:)
