Hi! My name is Crystal, and my hubby and I decided to start homesteading. We started raising chickens (layers) this past summer/fall. One of our hens hatched a chick in mid November! (Didn't see that coming!) Now the chick is about 7 weeks old, getting pretty big, and I'm wondering if/how to introduce him/her to the other chickens, how to tell if it's a hen it not, etc? I'm a little leary because we had two roosters and one got killed, we're guessing by other chickens but not sure why. Help please!!

Congrats on getting a chick a couple months ago. If you want some help identifying the sex of your chick, you can post a close up photo at the following link and members will give you an idea of what it is. They can also give you an idea of the breed if you need some assistance with that.

Hope you're enjoying your birds and nice to have you here.

Welcome to BYC, Crystal. Glad you decided to join our flock. There is an excellent article at http://poultrykeeper.com/general-chickens/introducing-new-chickens on how to introduce new chickens to an existing flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in integrating the new bird into your flock.
