Hello
Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself... First off let me say we have no chickens yet but great plans ! Our backyard is very "finished" at this point with no place to put chickens... all fenced in and landscaped. That being said our daughter (15 yrs old) has been asking for chickens for years. We visited a friends house the other day and saw their new coop, large organic garden and I was hooked.
I will be cutting a gate into the cedar fence along the back of our finished yard (we have a big property) and fencing in an area that will become "The Farm" ...
Inside that area (24x18) we will be putting a coop with run that we have picked out online, surrounded around the perimeter with raised bed organic gardens. We are anxious to get going on this project ! Need to cut down some trees first - Very excited to get my Rhode Island Reds on site ! Hope to keep you all posted on our progress with pictures and updates.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Welcome to the world of chickens, you are in for some fun. We have had RIR's (still have 1) and I really like them. They're good laying birds and so pretty. They can have an attitude but with handling and catering to their every need, lol, they can be really sweet.

That's great your daughter is interested in chickens. Kids and chickens just seem to go together.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. And if you haven't already, check out the Learning Center. There are some great articles in their covering all sorts of poultry-related topics.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loved our chickens and made lap pets of the calmer and more gentle breeds. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop/run built and in getting your RIRs.

Thank you all for the welcome ! I am sure I will have a bunch of questions as time goes on.. Started clearing the area where the new farm will be over the weekend and was wondering a bunch of things concerning egg collection and storage. I will post those in appropriate forum :) Thanks again -
