New to Chick

I usually start my chicks with the same sort of plastic lids, but I fill them with smooth river rocks (or marbles, etc) to prevent drownings. The chicks just drink from in between the rocks. Welcome and good luck with your babies!

I agree with the rest. You will get 1 maybe 2 weeks out of that cabinet before they outgrow it. What are you using for a heat source? I did not see any heat lamp or heat plate in your set up. Also I would ditch those lids and actually by 1 quart feeder and a no drown waterer for them. Those lids are just going to get dumped and pooped all in. I found a great video when I was first getting started it is a bit long but well worth watching .

Yes, I've had them for over a week now. So I learned the hard way about the lids. There was no heating source in the picture because that was before they arrived, I put them in our garage with a lamp at 80-85 degrees. We are in Florida so we go outside as well. The cabinets are temporary anyway. My husband is building the coop outside. Thanks for the video, definitely watching it in the morning.

It's been great since we expanded the brooder. I'm hoping they will be okay in their new house until the are ready for the coop.

They have already went through the whole bag of medicated feed...I would like to try something else but don't want to mess up their lil tummies.

It's hardware cloth. I just bolted it onto the lids.
