Northwest Arkansas
Hello, there! My fiance and I are getting ready to move back to NWAR, where I grew up, in a couple of weeks. We've lived in the eastern Sierras in California for the last five years. I bought the book "Backyard Homestead" because we want to start a vegetable garden in our backyard, and the chapter on chicken raising convinced us to give it a try. He grew up on a little farm and has raised chickens before, and we've always talked about how when we settle down for good we want to have some land with some chickens, a couple goats, a pig or two, rabbits, dogs, and our cats. ANYways... is there anyone else here in the Northwest Arkansas area? What are some of you guys' recommendations on books that give a good comprehensive overview of raising backyard chickens? Where do you guys typically buy your chicks?

Hope to get to know everyone here better!

. You can find local members in the Where am I? Where are you! section. Many people buy chicks from feed stores as well as local breeders.

Hello and welcome to BYC

I've read books on keeping chickens, but this site's been the best source for me so far. Enjoy your chicken adventures and if you have any questions, ask! We're here to help.

I am just up the road from you, in SW Missouri...just north of Springfield. There's a hatchery here in Springfield that has chicks all year around, and another in Lebanon. The one is Springfield is Estes. Welcome to the neighborhood and to BYC.
