New to Chicken Life

Hello! My name is Mary Ellen. A family friend suggested that I join this site. I live in Kentucky and I love chickens (dogs, cats, lizards and snakes too). My Grandmother had a large cement chicken coop when I was growing up and she would allow my cousin and I to go inside and gather the eggs. It was a wonderful memory! After speaking to a trusted chicken owner, I have decided to purchase two Silkie Hens (not chicks) for my backyard this Spring. I live in a neighborhood and have a relatively small yard. However, I have a great spot picked out for the two Silkie Hens. I look forward to starting this new venture! Thank you for including me!

I am not sure as of yet. However, it was suggested that I get two Hens b/c you can't tell the sex when they're chickens. I was really wanting chicks...but my hope is for them to lay eggs!

Hi! Welcome to BYC! I think you will love having chickens in the yard. I hope you will consider having 3 instead of 2, so that if anything happens you wont be left with one lonely hen. Either way, I think you are in for a fun adventure!

You can get chicks that are 99% reliably female.
