Good morning all,

If we want 8-10 egg laying chickens, how many roosters should we have? Can you mix chicken breeds so you can have some white and some brown eggs?

Thanks,

Welcome to BYC.

For egg laying only, you do not need a rooster. You would only need the rooster if you wanted fertile eggs, or a flock protector, or just wanted a roo.
It is usually suggested 1 roo to 10 hens, but that is variable, depends on the roo's personality. breed, and how you plan on keeping them. More than one may lead to fighting.
And Yes you can mix breeds to have a colorful selection in your egg basket, not a problem. I think that's what most of us do. I have brown, cream and green eggs.

Welcome to BYC!

You only need one rooster if you want to hatch eggs. Two roosters will fight.

You can mix chicken breeds. Some will have a very colorful variety of egg colors.
