New to chicken raising!

So cool to see so many great people on this site! Thank you for the greetings! I adore the picture the chicken roosting on dads shoulder! I wanted Buff Orphingtons, but the store would not sell me just 3. They said I had to buy 6. The city ordinence says I can only have 3 so why do I want to buy six? They said it was company policy since people were getting them for 'other than agricultural purposes'. I was thinking people were using them for Easter baskets and then, after the cute chicks grow up, they abandone them.

Anyway, I went to another local feed store and the sellection was slim. But I am very happy with the girls. I had a pen in the house for a long time until they kept getting out and I knew it was time to go outside. I have at least 1 rat who comes to visit, but I have a Yorkie and a Neopoitan Mastiff to guard the property. I don't keep food in the hen house so there is no attraction there. It has to be the food on the ground and the seeds for the wild bird population. I have read if you mix concrete mix with flour and put it where the rat can get it but not the chickens or pets it will kill them. I have personal issues with causing anything pain or trauma, I feel guilty to have caused any kind of suffering. I know, I am a big baby... (laugh) When and if the rat becomes an issue I will deal with it. If the dogs get it, it will be over fast and part of the natural order of life.

That first egg will be like the first grandchild...so exciting! Anticipation is killing me....!
