I am new to chickens. I have wanted some for as long as I can remember and when we bought our new (to us... it's 170 years old) house late in fall, I made a plan to get some chicks in spring. Unbeknownst to me, fate was about to throw a curveball and the previous owners left a rooster behind. My understanding was that they were only able to take 5 of their 40 chickens to their new home and assumed that they had butchered or rehomed the rest, so didn't say anything to them about the roo. However, the coop is an entire single car garage and I knew he'd never make it through winter in WI alone so I put out some feelers to get him some hens. Ironically, the former owners of our home took all of their birds with them and found out in short order they could keep none of them. So Walter ended up getting four of his former flock back.
I currently have five chickens. An Easter Egger hen and rooster, a lavender orpington/RIR cross hen, a Delaware hen, and a bantam RIR hen. I have six new breeds on order for spring and am excited to expand my flock.
I'm a mom of four kiddos (one tween and three teens) and a part time photographer. We also have two dogs, three rabbits, a bunch of fish, and a horse. Life is never dull - that's for sure!
A friend sent me to BYC and I'm excited to learn what I can to give my chickadees the best life I can give them.
