New to Chickens and getting my flock started on Saturday!

G’Day from down under EsqChick :frow Welcome!

That is exciting and I wish you all the best!

I also hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you have not found them yet, BYC has a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Hi All! I am just joining this awesome community after quietly stalking it for months (years actually). I live in Oakland, CA where we are allowed to have an unlimited number of hens, provided the coop is a minimum distance from dwellings. Up until last August I lived in a rental where our backyard was tiny and did not have the minimum setbacks for BYC. My family (DH, DS(5) and DD(10)) bought a house with a fairly large (though mainly downsloped) backyard in August last year and I now have a big enough backyard to have BYC!

We are getting our chicks on Saturday this week (3 day olds). I have reserved 1 each of Ameraucana, Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpington and Black Australorp. Depending on how the mood strikes me when I pick them up, I may get a couple more. We'll see (chicken math before I even have a chicken! LOL). So very excited to start our flock.

So, I've got a space set up for the chicks in our garage, with the brooder and all the accouterments for raising them until they're feathered and I am in the final stages of selecting a coop and run for my backyard. I can't wait to continue to learn more about these awesome animals from experience and all of you!
Welcome

Welcome to the chicken addiction! I started with 8 and added from there. I’ve made some seriously rookie mistakes since last May. Since then I have learned and am still learning and now have a healthy flock of 30 birds. Lol Good luck and have fun! Oh best advice, build for more chickens than you think you’ll have
