A rooster is nothing like a hen and the presence of one will change the flock dynamics. Usually not in favor of the hens being more pets.

Hens will lay just as many eggs without a rooster albeit, they will not be fertile.

Hi! Welcome to BYC! I'm with everyone else here. I wouldn't get a rooster first year out. That being said, you may inadvertently get one in with your chicks. Then we'll have a completely different discussion about roosters.
