On March 18th I received my 4 little chicks and it was then we started to design and build the coop. I think it turned out awesome and the girls seem to like it. It ended up taking 3 weeks to build simply because it rained non-stop for 2 weeks. I was thinking we would spend around $600 to build but once we started...hubby wanted to add the cedar siding and I wanted the automatic chicken door so it ended up about double that. We still want to add in a watering system in the near future. Here are a few pics of the progression. Tell me what you think.
First day with chicks. We put them in our old tortoise enclosure and it worked out pretty well. The yorkies insisted on keeping watch over the babies the first 2 days.
Mitzi and Shawdowmere. Those 2 are a hoot. Mitzi thought it was fun watching the chickens and this little chick would come up to the glass and peck at the window driving the dog to go into barking mode.
By day 3...all the girls knew how to use the chicken nipple.

Day one of the building the chicken coop...a month AFTER the chicks arrived.

3 weeks later...we finally get to work on it again now that it stopped raining and snowing! Nest box in.
Floor of coop in and nest box.
Plywood has been added.
Plank cedar siding going up.
Siding done
Painted the non cedar portions of the coop. Coop doors have been roughed in and hen house portion of the coop closed in. Rain coming so must protect the roof.
Coop doors in and you can't tell but the shingles have been installed!
Painted coop floor & walls. Roosting bar and poop board has been installed.
Trim on windows and shingles on nest box.
Chicken ramp done and automatic door is installed.
Pine bedding in and feeder is up.
Almost completed.
Stained and ready for the girls.
