Hello, I’m Dana! We purchased our first chicks this past Spring in April. We chose to go with a mixed flock and after researching breeds we selected (2) Speckled Sussex, (2) Salmon Faverolles, (2) Easter Eggers, (1) Barnevelder and (1) Welsummer. We selected breed based on friendliness (we wanted our children to be able to enjoy the backyard chicken experience), cold hardiness and egg laying capabilities. Luckily, they all survived and thrived and we were surprised to see a small green speckled egg appear in the coop 3 weeks ago. We haven’t expected to see any until at least the end of this month or maybe even early November! One of our Easter Eggers is apparently and early bird.
;-) Her ‘sister’ followed suite a few days later and laid a small, shiny bluish egg. Both have been laying nearly daily ever since. I find owning chickens rewarding, interesting and, at times, entertaining. I have a lot to learn and am hoping to be able to gain some knowledge here. Thanks for reading!

Hello Dana and welcome to BYC! :frow

Nice assortment of breeds you keep. Congrats on the first eggs, they are always super egg-citing!
