Hello! My name is Marty, and I'm already thankful for all the help I've received as a bystander on this website. It's time to join.

My husband and I moved to an old house on the main street of a rural South Carolina town a few years ago. He's a chemistry professor, and I stay home with our 5-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son. I love to play music - mostly piano, but we have a few other folksy instruments lying around. I like to paint. I love parades. I always fill out a bracket for the NCAA Basketball Tournament, and never come close.

Gardening and providing real food are important to me. The small yard we have isn't exactly a farm, but we've managed to squeeze a nice garden into it, and now we have a fully operational chicken coop. We currently have seven 2-week-old chicks: 3 Black Austrolorps and 4 "Araucanas" (though I'm learning that they are more likely a mix). Another shopper at the farm store helped us choose what she thought were females, but I wouldn't bet on that yet. We are hoping for eggs, but we may get some bonus meat out of any that dare to be male. (I have nothing against males; our neighborhood is just a little too tight for roosters.)

I've learned everything I know about chickens through these forums (including the inspiration for our new coop), and I look forward to joining the backyard-chicken-raising community!
