Congrats on the upcoming chicks! What breeds are you getting?

If you put a cover (something that won't restrict air flow) over the brooder, that will help protect them from overly-curious dogs/cats and will also keep the chicks inside the brooder...they learn to flit out pretty early.

We picked out 7, all different breeds, but based on cold hardiness and good temperaments. I have have to find my list...it wasn’t until after we placed the order that I realized there was a huge range in sizes. I hope that won’t be a problem.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined us on our roost. This is a great place to learn and share. I'm using a rabbit cage as an indoor brooder this year. Easy to clean and folds up for easy storage. Make sure your dogs can't open the door to your brooder room. Then make sure you have a good air filter to deal with the dust that comes with chickens. Enjoy your new adventure.

Hope you enjoy all this site has to offer. As a new chicken keeper, first thing to get ready is the brooder to put those cute little fuzz balls in when you get them home. There is so much info here you can access on that and all kinds of other things to do with anything chicken.
When it comes time to build that coop, keep in mind the critters lurking in those woods, that look at your flock like a free buffet. Build your coop and run not just to keep your girls in but more to keep the critters out. That includes attacks from the air. Those girls depend on you to keep them safe!! Happy chicken keeping

Found my list.
Mixed flock to be, one each: Buff Orp, Buff Brahma, Dark Cornish, Silver Laced Wy, Golden Laced Wy, Welsummer, Silver-spangled Hamburg

From what I read,they’ll range from 4 1/2 to 9 lbs when grown with most around 6 lbs. Can you tell I don’t have a clue? There’s time to change the order if this is too strange a mixture, so if anyone has thoughts, I’d really appreciate it.
