Hello Everyone,

I finally wore my husband down and we just got a small flock of Buff Orpingtons and White LegHorns. Originally we only decided on 6......but somehow we are up to 10!!!! LOL. I've had them about two weeks now. I am in LOVE. My husband and I (mostly my husband lol) busted our butts to get the coop and run done. I got the birds before the coop was completed. I didnt realize how fast they grow!!! All is well and the coop and run is completed. My husband did an awesome job!!!!

I am positive I have a cockeral in the mix :( I would love to keep him (he is gorgeous and sooo friendly) but legally cannot. (and my neighbors would not be happy!) We are allowed to have hens where I live, but not roosters. I am going crazy trying to figure out what to do with him. I know a lot of people end up eating them, but I don't think I have the heart to do that. Finding a good home is going to be hard :/

I have two dogs who are doing awesome with my chickens. One of them actually seems to "herd" them!!!! Its quite funny to watch. I was a little nervous that they would try to chase the chickens, but they show no interest in doing so. Of course the chickens are never ever alone with the dogs. The chickens are in their run during the day while I'm at work - we covered the top as well with chicken wire and then I let them free range in my fenced yard when I am home. They LOVE it. I could watch them for hours exploring the yard.

I willtry and post some pics at some point......have to upload to photobucket first.

Hello and welcome to BYC from Ohio! Aww, so glad to hear you're enjoying your chickens so much! I started with just three....Now I believe I have....let me count.....14. They are addicting! LOL

Take care and glad you joined,

Hi and welcome! That's a shame about your cockerel. I have a cockerel that I don't let out of the coup until 9am so he doesn't crow early in the morning. So poor lad is in the dark until 9am with his two girls. He is very sweet - he cock-a-doodle-do's when my hen lays an egg! He is cute.

Some people look for cockerels to add to their flock - so it's worth advertising him for free to a good home. Or donate him to a farm? That's what I have planned for any other cockerels I get out of the chicks I have at the moment. It's a working farm but also a tourist attraction so I'm guessing they'll take them. Find somewhere like that and it's a perfect place for him! Good luck! x

Welcome to BYC! When we first started we had around 24 chickens in 2009! More than half of them were roosters! We butchered all except 3 roosters. Good luck with your new flock!!!
