New to chickens? how many are you starting with?

I started with 4 and now I'm getting 16 more, 8 are for sure getting sold, as right now keeping chickens outside in a is agianst the by law but they can free range?? Odd law, either way I was only planning on keeping 8 large chicken:)

I was originally going to get 6-8. Then it became 8-10 (to account for losses and roosters of course). Then I went in on an order with a friend, and ended up with 11. It's still not enough of each breed! And I wanted to try so many other breeds too. I have 3 EE's, 2 RIR, 2 Blk Aus, 2 Buff Orp, and 2 Barred Rock

I am just getting started - the coop & run are almost finished!

I currently have two brooder tubs in my dining room with 13 chicks in them.

I am afraid that the first tub might have at least 4 out of 7 being roos and who knows about the other tub. I am guessing I will be lucky to get 6 pullets that I can keep.

The coop is built to hold 9 - and that is where I am sticking for size.

Really, I mean it.

No more than 9!

I started with 4 in August. 3 laying hens and a rooster that a good friend gave me!! They I just needed more! I bought 15 pullets!! Their all laying now. I've been selling out of my eggs so I decided to get some one! I'm buying some sex links tomorrow from TSC. When I went this afternoon while I was on my way to work they have a bunch of Black sex links and only 5 red. Since they have a 6 min I will get black & red sex links. And then I'm going Monday and buying 5 buff orphington. So I will have 30 total!! My fam is just rolling their eyes at me!!

We built a tractor in Oct 2008. It was plenty big for the 3 hens we were planning on getting, but would hold up to about 5. Including the 8 babies I bought today, we have 25 and a broody sitting on 6 eggs!

We out-grew the tractor quickly. Now I know why everyone says to build MUCH bigger than you think you'll need. (And why everyone I know has more than one coop!)

Enjoy!

Haha! before I have the first done... I already have the chicken bug with my family rolling their eyes at me I'll just laugh when they say the eggs are the best eggs they have ever tasted!

We're all Doomed to own a ton of chickens!

were starting with 5 but i wished i would have gotten a couple more!! might have a 2 roo's (only wanted one) and feel bad for my outcast...they usually sleep in two's and so someone's almost always left out! LOL and even number would have been nice as crazy as it sounds! our coop's only comfortable for that many though and i want them to be happy! =0)
