New to chickens? how many are you starting with?

I started out saying I wanted 6, bought 12, then I got 3 freebies... Waiting to see how many of those 3 turn out to roos! Luckily I thought ahead and built a 6x6 coop so I have plenty of "growing" room!

I was going to shoot for about 15, 13 hens and 2 roosters. Since the minimum order was 25, I ordered that many, plus the free "exotic chick", plus one extra to account for possible attrition; bringing me to 27 healthy appearing chicks right at 12 days of age.

We were going to start with 6, then it turned into 8, I ordered 10 and checked the box for the free extra! We have 2 BA, 2EE, 2SLW, 1SS, 1BO, 2PR and 1 RIR, four week old chicks. I now thinking it might be nice to have some dark brown eggs too LOL!!!! Good Luck with the crazy chicken math!

My husband agreed to a dozen. I ordered 25 from McMurray (minimal order allowed) but I have to wait until April 20 for their arrival. In the meantime a friend called and said they had chicks at Rural King so hubby said go get 20 or so. I brought home 13 which are all doing great. A week later a friend sold me 5 laying hens that are a little over a year old. Once all is said and done, and if they all live, I will have 44 chickens in in the next week and a half of varying breeds and ages.
