Hi I'm brand new to raising chickens. I've been thinking about it for a couple years now and finally taking the plunge. I so new I don't even have the chickens yet. I have the coop and run ready but am having trouble finding a place to purchase the actual chickens in Northern New Jersey. State fair is this weekend, I may have to take a ride and check it out.

I've already found great information on this site!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop and run ready and in getting your flock.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I'm glad you've decided to take the chicken plunge! It's fun, messy, stressful, rewarding and exciting all the way! We are here to help if you have any questions along the way as well. Good luck to you!

Hi! I am also new! We recently finished our coop and run and got our baby chicks about a week ago!! I requested a catalog from Murray McMurray (google it) but we ended up going locally. I live in Ocean County, NJ! We looked
At a few places, Jersey Chickens was one main but they- didn't have the breeds we wanted when we were ready. Tractor supply was another one. We ended up going to Agway in New Egypt but I think they have another location in PA, not sure of your location but thatcould be closer! You can find all of these sites on Google! We ended up spending about $120.00. We purchased a light and bulb, feeders and waterers, feed, bedding, and 6 chicks. I also got a magazine :) ours were day old chicks (actually about 6days old when we got them) but Jersey Chickens had started pullets about 4-8 weeks old. They are a joy and very easy to take care of. The kids love them. They've doubled in size, but won't be producing eggs until thanksgiving at least

Oh, we have 2 Rhode Island reds, 2 Easter eggers, and black australorp and I have no idea what the 6th is

Thanks everyone! I was leaning toward getting Rhode Island Reds because they are pretty hardy and can handle our Jersey winters. I was also hoping to get started pullets for my first time which also limits my options.

I looked into Jersey Chickens as well but they don't have started pullets right now. I'm in Morris County. The Sussex County fair is this weekend and there will be a few local breeders there. I figured I can at least get their information.

Thanks for all the info and welcoming me everyone!
