In the Brooder
Hello all, my wife and I decided to raise a few chickens. We live in a rural area, have a lake on the back of the property and a lot of wooded area. However we put our coop by the pole barn next to our open field. We are in the process of converting to Solar and adding a greenhouse as well.
We built our first chicken coop/run over the July 4th weekend and got a half dozen chicks. The following day we bought the last of what the local feed mill had left. Now we have 12 Chickens all together. 4 Rhode Island Red/Colombians and 8 Ameraucanas.
My wife and I love animals, we have quite a few rescue pets. All house dwellers. We got the chickens just have around and later to produce eggs. We don't know a lot about rising them, but seem to be doing well. We have a feeder and water in the run area and a smaller set up in the coop. We feed them organic feed.
We added a larger run area that can be closed off from the other run. I just read about the tractor run set up and may build one over the weekend.
We are now looking at the possibility of raising some Meat Chickens. I know they need a higher protein feed and a bit more care.
We've been looking at Jumbo Cornish Rocks Cross.I have a friend at work who's kids do 4H and he's given me a lot of advice.
Here's a few pics of our current set up. The coop has a plastic roof right now, we re purposed lumber from our old deck. I'm going to build a peek roof for it soon. We may build a bigger insulated coop, winters suck in Michigan. I know we'll need a seperate coop/run for the Meat hens.
The coop and the added run.

The chickens as of today.
