So I picked these two ladies up on Thursday, but I am not sure what they are and neither was the old owner........The smaller one with the white earlobes lays white eggs (duh) and the larger one lays light brown eggs (hubby maintains that they are pink). I am thinking that Louise (smaller/white earlobes) is an Andalusian......but like I said I am a newbie and know nothing

. I am thinking Thelma (the larger one) is a Brahma, but again, unsure. She does have feathered feet, and the normal number of toes. To me she seems HUGE! I am almost afraid of what my Jersey Giant is going to look like in comparison

. What I do know is that they were purchased this past fall at a local feed store. Hope that helps!

Before you read this, please understand this is my best guess and I tried (I did well I think) I've included alot of information about the two breeds because you say you're new to the chicken world and I wish to help. The two breeds I selected are Dark Brahma for Thelma.

Dark Brahma Hen : Good Setters, Docile birds, Friendly and very Calm....Among the Best Mothers of heavy chicken breeds. In other words, you'll love her!

Comb: Pea
Leg Color: Yellow (must be feather-footed)
Egg Color: light brown (my light browns appear pink too!)
Uses: Dual Purpose (eggs and meat)
Broody: YES!

For Louise I also say Andalusian (blue variety)

Blue Andalusian: Wild, Restless, Flighty, Good in confinment, Noisy, Shy of humans, Non-Setters. In other words, not a city chicken but they were bred to lay lots of white eggs so you'll enjoy her.

Comd: Single
Leg Color: Willow
Egg Color: White
Uses: Egg Layer
Broody: Seldom

Blue Andalusian Hens and Rooster:

All the breed information was found at this link:

The photos were copied from these two links:

I appreciate all the info too.

You are sure very welcome. I am always willing to share any knowledge about chickens to someone who is just starting. I learned most of it on BYC. Just keep reading the threads and posting and you'll learn alot.

BTW I was very impressed with the fact that you (being new to chickens) got BOTH breeds correct on your first guess! When I first started I had no idea what a Brahma looked like and have only recently learned about the Andalusian. Very nice way to start...You're on your way!

Good Luck!

Yep, yep, yep! Brahma and Blue Andalusian! Love them both! (Okay, I prefer the light Brahmas.)

Both are great birds. Fabulous for you! (If you can find a Blue Andalusian Roo, and incubate some eggs, you would be helping to preserve a rare (critically listed breed). I am very tempted to sell almost ALL my birds this/next year and just raise blue Andalusians for few years, selling in pairs/trios only.

Have fun!!

If I found someone locally I would be happy to loan her out for a little bit, but we are not allowed to have roosters here. I am just so excited to have laying hens! My husband is deploying soon and we got them as a distraction for my soon to be 2 year old and I. So far they are working like a charm!
