Hi, I have a horse farm in Ocala Florida and just added 6 "8" week old chickens to the farm 6 weeks ago. I am loving them! We have a Lavender Orpington, Buff Orpington, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Green Queen Easter Egger, Easter Egger, Olive Easter Egger.
Hiya Trinitru, . You have a lovely flock! And yes IMHO it's fine to give treats in moderation. You will find as you develop a reputation as the "treat bringer" it will go a long ways toward getting your chicks to follow you where you want them to go. Best of luck with your new flock, glad you could join us.
Hello and welcome to BYC! Glad you joined.
I started giving my chicks mealworms when they were in their third week. I started them off with chick grit and sod chunks from my yard in their second week. Just keep the treats to a low roar and they will be fine.
Your flock is just beautiful.
Hi and welcome to at BYC We're so happy you decided to join us
Happy Mother's Day
Mine get sand and grit on their first day.
On about day three I introduce them to meal worms. When I started doing it, I was trying to promote active foraging and exercise for meat birds but has since continued the practice for my layers, turkeys and ducks.
General rule of thumb is to keep treats to under 10% of their total diet. When they are babies I like to keep that number way lower. Meal worms contain a lot of protein and a lot of fat, so keep that in mind.
