My husband and I both had chickens when we were young children and decided to "take the plunge" this year. Along with our newly homeschooled 11 year old daughter in Western Washington State, we researched and bought 8 "mixed chicks" from a local farm and raised them to the current 16 week age. I asked the farmer for 7 hens and 1 rooster. We have discovered we have at least two roosters.... We started out with a small tractor coop and my husband built a large, four nesting box coop with 144 sq foot run, completely enclosed and we call it "The Aviary". We let them out in our 1,000 sq ft lot daily to graze. They go into their run when we want them to, but it took some training. We live in a downtown of a large town and looked up all codes before beginning the endeavor. I appreciate this website, I have frequently looked in on your question and answers to see how others are caring for their flocks.
