Hi, My name is Shirley and I am new to chickens. We have 13 beautiful and amazing chickens. Some are funny looking, I will admit. However, we have already built them 2 chicken coops, one inside and one outside. Our chickens are already laying eggs and our roosters are extremely active. Out of the 13 chickens we have 3 roosters, 2 of which are the gorgeous Blue Andalusian breed. This is becoming one of my favorites. I look forward to reading great posts and learning more about chickens as the time passes. Best wishes to all!

glad you have joined us.

Welcome to BYC, Shirley. Glad you decided to join our flock. Blue Andalusians are gorgeous birds and I would love to see some pics of yours.) If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Hi Shirley, welcome to BYC!

Blue Andalusians are on my "wish list", nice to hear you're enjoying them. Make yourself at home here and if you have questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks for joining us!

Nice to meet you Shirley. If you intend to keep all 3 roosters, it would be best if you get a lot more hens. Roosters can handle 10 hens each. Any less and the girls tend to get overbred and damaged. Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful welcome! Here are a few pictures of my beautiful Blue Andalusian chickens.

One worry I have is their lack of ability to tolerate cold, as we live in Colorado.

Thank you again for the warm welcome!

Thank you Drumstick Diva, that is wonderful advice. We are getting 20 more chicks at the end of this month. We do separate the roosters from the hens regularly as well, but I was not aware of the rooster to hen ratio, I will definitely take this into consideration.

Thank you again for the great advice,

Shirley

You're welcome. Be sure that your coop is draft free, dry, and well ventilated to keep moisture from building up in it. Feathers are wonderful insulators and moisture is a greater danger than cold. Also, the large combs of Andalusians are particularly susceptible to frostbite. Rubbing Vaseline on the comb will help reduce the frostbite.
