We moved into a house and with the house came 2 adult chickens. We followed the instructions from the previous owners and our happy ladies seemed to be doing well. Tonight our 1 year old dog got loose when the chickens were out for their evening free time. The dog killed one of them. Now we are left with one chicken and NO idea even who to contact with advice for what to do next.

Is the one who is left going to be ok? Can we get another adult (or 2)? How does that work? I have been reading about quarantine and all the diseases and pecking order and I wouldn't even know where to get another chicken from?

Thank you so much for being kind, we are heartbroken.

Oh, I am so sorry! Yes, you will need another hen or two. Make sure you don't get a roo. That would be way too much mating for one hen. You can try looking on Craigslist for more hens. They always have chickens available! Go to farm and garden, and try looking there. By the way, WELCOME TO BYC! :woot

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Your chicken may not welcome newcomers at first. Generally they need a gradual introduction. The kindest, gentlest way of integrating new to established birds is the "Look but don't touch." method. You can put that in the search box and it should come up for you. I would recommend getting 2 newbies so you have less chance of ending up with a one and only.

Please keep watch on your dog. He has been successful in killing one and will look for opportunities to get the rest. Either the birds should be confined to a large, covered run,
or the dog should be. Chickens and dogs should never meet. The chickens are always the ones that end up dead.
